ABOUT THE ACADEMY
The Orton-Gillingham Academy
The Orton-Gillingham Academy (OGA) is a nonprofit organization dedicated to preserving and advancing the principles of the Orton-Gillingham Approach.
Founded in 1995, OGA establishes professional and ethical standards, certifies qualified practitioners, and accredits training and instructional programs that meet those standards.
Unlike organizations that both train and certify practitioners, OGA provides independent certification and accreditation, helping ensure the integrity and quality of Orton-Gillingham instruction.
Through its Fellows and members, the Academy carries forward the work of Dr. Samuel Orton and Anna Gillingham while maintaining high standards for the practice of the Orton-Gillingham Approach.
INDEPENDENCE BUILT IN
What Makes OGA Different?
01ㅤㅤCertification, Not Training
The Orton-Gillingham Academy (OGA) certifies and accredits training programs but does not provide training directly.
Coursework and practicum experiences are delivered by Academy Fellows, who are independently certified to provide the Academy curriculum.
This separation helps avoid the conflict of interest that can occur when the same organization oversees both training and certification.
02ㅤㅤA Direct Lineage
Founded by practitioners trained by Dr. Samuel Orton, Anna Gillingham, and other early leaders of the Orton-Gillingham Approach, the Academy maintains a direct connection to its origins. Every OGA member is part of a professional lineage that traces back to Dr. Samuel Orton and Anna Gillingham.
03ㅤㅤLearners of All Ages
The Academy certifies practitioners to teach learners of all ages, from preschool through adulthood. It emphasizes a deep understanding of Orton-Gillingham principles and instructional practices, preparing educators to teach all areas of literacy in one-to-one, small-group, and classroom settings.
04ㅤㅤNonprofit Status
OGA is a nonprofit, tax-exempt 501(c)(3) organization incorporated under New York Education Law and authorized by the Board of Regents of the University of the State of New York.
