Overview and Process

Accreditation by the Orton-Gillingham Academy recognizes Orton-Gillingham training and instructional programs that have met the Academy’s standards through a formal review process.

The Academy provides an objective, professional assessment of programs through its Accrediting Committee. Accreditation applies to the Orton-Gillingham program within an organization; the Academy does not accredit the school or organization itself.

The Academy accredits two distinct types of programs:

PROGRAMS 01

Training Programs

Purpose: Training future Orton-Gillingham practitioners

Training Programs prepare individuals to become Orton-Gillingham practitioners through coursework, practicum, supervision, and feedback. The instructional leadership of an accredited Training Program must be vested in an Academy Fellow.

The Academy accredits Training Programs at the Associate and Clinical levels. Associate training prepares practitioners for entry-level practice with ongoing supervision. Clinical training, formerly known as Certified, prepares practitioners to work as independent Orton-Gillingham practitioners.

Accreditation

To be eligible for accreditation, a Training Program must have been in operation for at least three years and have an Academy Fellow providing instructional leadership. The program must also demonstrate appropriate curriculum and staff preparation and experience. Before applying for accreditation, at least five trainees must have applied to the Academy’s Certifying Committee, with an 80% acceptance rate.

The accreditation process takes a minimum of one year. Once a preliminary application is accepted, an Academy mentor is assigned to guide the program through the self-study and application process. The program submits supporting documentation for review by the Accrediting Committee.

Instructional Programs

Purpose: Providing Orton-Gillingham instruction to students

Instructional Programs are schools, camps, and clinics that provide Orton-Gillingham instruction to students. Unlike Training Programs, which prepare individuals to become Orton-Gillingham practitioners, Instructional Programs provide instruction to learners.

Instructional Programs may provide individual and small-group instruction. Schools may also incorporate the Orton-Gillingham Approach throughout the school day. The instructional leadership of an accredited Instructional Program must be vested in an Academy Fellow.

Accreditation

To be eligible for accreditation, an Instructional Program must have been in operation for at least three years. Schools must already be accredited by an official school accreditation agency. The program must have an Academy Fellow providing instructional leadership and instructional staff who are Academy members at various levels of certification or are in the process of becoming Academy members.

The program must meet Academy standards for staffing, curriculum, instruction, professional development, and program oversight. The accreditation process takes a minimum of one year.
